The fourth film in the beloved Indiana Jones franchise was released on this day in movie history.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was released in theaters across the United States on May 22nd, 2008. The film was written by David Koepp (with story by George Lucas and Jeff Nathanson) and directed by Steven Spielberg.

Crystal Skull starred Harrison Ford, Shia LaBeouf, Cate Blanchett, and Karen Allen.

The film follows the latest adventure of archeologist-adventurer Indiana Jones, this time in 1957, as he races the Soviets in a mystery involving a mysterious skull.

The film was the first Indiana Jones film released following the original trilogy from the 1980s. Despite a mixed reception from critics, it was a success at the box office, making over $780 million dollars.
