In the game, players take on the role of Mario, chasing Donkey Kong through a factory where he has stolen Mario toys. The game combines platforming and puzzles. There are also levels where the player must safely guide the toys through a stage, and others where Mario battles Donkey Kong.

The game was a success, and Mario vs. Donkey Kong became a series in its own right with new games released for other handhelds and most recently, the WiiU.
