The game is focused on multiplayer, where teams of characters that can transform from human-like form to squid-like form try to control a stage. To do so, they must cover their map with a greater amount of ink than the other team. In the ink, players are faster and can use special powers, as well. Although the game is focused on multiplayer, a single-player campaign is also available.

Since its release, the game has received many new weapons, maps, and costumes as downloadable content. It was a big hit around the world, selling millions of copies. It has spawned numerous pieces of fan art, and has a thriving online community to this day. A sequel is on the way for the Nintendo Switch.
