It’s been a long-running series of game with passionate fans across the world, and the newest version released four years ago today.
Mario Kart 8 was released on May 30th, 2014 exclusively for the WiiU console. At launch, the game featured 32 tracks–16 all new and 16 remastered (and in some cases redesigned) retro tracks from past games. Since then, a pair of DLC packs have added 16 new courses to those, including some themed around other Nintendo franchises like Zelda, Animal Crossing and F-Zero.
Mario Kart 8 marks the first version with high-definition graphics. A major new feature in this installment is anti-gravity. Some tracks have portions where your cart can drive sideways or upside-down and even get a boost from running into an opponent.
New characters in the game available to be raced with include the Koopalings, a series of boss characters originating from Super Mario Brothers 3. The DLC packs have added even more characters like Link, Villager and Tanooki Mario.
The game has been a massive success for the Nintendo console, selling over 7-1/2 million copies across the world. A version for the Switch, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, was later released with some new characters and a different battle mode.
