The second live-action film based on a long-running comic book franchise was released on this day in movie history.
Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, a sequel to the film simply called Fantastic Four, was released in theaters on June 15th, 2007 in both the US and UK. Written by Dan Payne and Mark Frost (with story by Frost and John Turman), it was directed by Tim Story. The film saw the main cast of the first film (Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, Michael Chiklis, and Ioan Gruffudd) return along with new cast members Andre Braugher and Laurence Fishburne.
The Fantastic Four began as a Marvel Comics franchise in the early 1960s.
In this film, the superhero team encounter the superpowered Silver Surfer, and not far behind him, the planet-devouring being known as Galactus.
The film made an estimated $289 million at the box office. After this film, there would no more Fantastic Four movies with the same cast. A reboot with a new cast and crew was released last year.
