The game features a 3-on-3 street basketball style of gameplay. Players can also engage in over-the-top moves known as gamebreakers if they are able to fill up a meter with continued success in regular gameplay. NBA Street featured a mix of fictional characters and real players, as well as the ability to create-a-player. Single player and multiplayer functionality was featured.

The game was a success at retail and with critics, and the series would continue through the years with several more sequels. The Street line would also be expanded to soccer and football.
