The final cliffhanger of Star Trek: The Next Generation’s run first aired on this day in television history.
“Descent, Part I” is the 26th episode of the sixth season of Star Trek: The Next Generation and that season’s finale. Written by Ronald D. Moore (with story by Jeri Taylor), the episode first aired in syndication on June 21st, 1993.
In the episode, the crew encounter the Borg attacking a Federation outpost–but these are different Borg who seem to care for their comrades and attack on sight with energy weapons. At the same time, it seems that Commander Data is experiencing real emotions.
“Descent” is notable for the guest appearance of Stephen Hawking, who plays himself in an opening scene of the episode. The events of the episode would be resolved months later in the seventh season opener, “Descent, Part II.”
