This Day in Movie History – June 24th, 2011 – Disney/Pixar’s Cars 2 Released

A sequel to a hit animated film was released six years ago today.

Cars 2, a sequel to the smash hit from Disney and Pixar CG-animated film Cars, was released in theaters across North America on June 24th, 2011. Written by Ben Green (with story by Green, John Lasseter, and Don Fogelman), it was directed by Lasseter. The film features the voice talents of Owen Wilson, Larry the Cable Guy, Bonnie Hunt, Bruce Campbell, and Michael Caine.

As star race car Lightning McQueen and his friend, Mater the Tow Truck, head overseas to compete in the World Grand Prix, Mater finds himself mistaken as an American spy and becomes involved in a case involving a new alternative fuel and intrigue.

Despite mixed reviews, Cars 2 was a hit at the box office, making over an estimated $550 million. A third Cars movie was just released in theaters.
