This Day in Space History – July 25th, 1973 – Mars 5 Soviet Probe Launched

On this day in history, an unmanned spacecraft intended to study Mars for the Soviet Union was launched into space.

That spacecraft was Mars 5. It was launched aboard a Proton rocket on July 25th, 1973.

The spacecraft, equipped with an array of instruments to study the Red Planet, entered orbit in February of the next year. It did begin to return some information and photos, but eventually stopped working just a couple of weeks into its mission.
