This Day in Video Game History – July 26th, 2009 – Wii Sports Resort Released

The sequel to the original pack-in game to the Nintendo Wii was released eight years ago today in North America.

Developed and published by Nintendo, Wii Sports Resort was released in the United States on July 26th, 2009 exclusively for the Nintendo Wii video game console.

The game includes twelve events. Bowling and Golf return from the original Wii Sports. The new games include swordfighting, wakeboarding, cycling, canoeing, archery, basketball, table tennis, frisbee, parachuting, and power cruising. It is set on WuHu Island, a setting originally created for the Wii Fit game.

The game is bundled with the Wii MotionPlus accessory, which attached to the normal Wii Remote to give it enhanced motion controls. These allow for more precise and detailed movements.

Wii Sports Resort would go on to be a massive hit, selling over 32 million estimated copies.
