The game was built around the Pokémon Gold and Silver versions released the previous year.

Like most games in the Pokémon series, the player controls a Pokémon trainer, venturing around the world training and catching Pokémon while gaining skills and battling other trainers and gym leaders.

Crystal was notable for being the first one in the series to allow the player’s character to be male or female. In addition, the game features a Battle Tower, where players can fight against other trainers.
