The game featured the debut of the Nintendo character, Kirby. In the side-scrolling platformer game, Kirby must travel through lands, avoiding obstacles and defeating enemies. Kirby can inhale enemies or items and either swallow them or use them as projectiles. It should be noted that Kirby’s familiar power to copy the abilities of other enemies wouldn’t make its debut until the next game in the series.

Although Kirby is now a familiar pink character, in the North American box art, Kirby is portrayed as white, likely to match the monochromatic color scheme of the original Game Boy.

The game was a success, selling over 5 million copies across the world. Kirby’s Dream Land was later released for the 3DS Virtual Console service.
