A video game for mobile phones that would go on to see massive success was first released five years ago today.
Clash of Clans, developed and published by SuperCell was first released for Apple’s iOS systems like the iPad and iPhone on August 2nd, 2012. It would later be released for Android platforms as well.
In the game, players must construct and defend a village while growing troops and battling other clans. Most of the gameplay is centered around a massively-multiplayer online community, where clans can team-up or fight against each other. Through the battles, players can earn upgrades to make their villages bigger, troops stronger, or other enhancements.
The game follows a free-to-play model, where the initial app is free, but more in-app microtransactions can be bought to speed along progress, play more, or instantly purchase enhancements.
The game has been a big hit, becoming one of the most successful game apps at one point or another on both the Apple and Google Play stores.
