One of two animated series based on the hit video game franchise from the mid 90s made its debut on this day in television history.
The series, simply known as Sonic the Hedgehog, made its debut on ABC on September 18th, 1993.
Jaleel White, best known as Urkel from Family Matters, provided the voice of the title character. Other voice talents from the series include Charlie Adler, Jim Cummings, Kath Soucie, Rob Paulsen, and Frank Welker.
The series, known for its dark and foreboding setting, had Sonic leading a group of rebels known as the Freedom Fighters, against the planet’s ruler, the sinister Dr. Robotnik.
The show only lasted for two seasons on ABC before coming to an end with 26 episodes produced.
However, it still has a fanbase to this day. Many of those fans praise the darker setting, what they consider a deep storyline and other elements of the show, including the theme song, “The Fastest Thing Alive.”
Shout! Factory has released the show on DVD in its complete form.
