The last television series starring one of the legends of television comedies made its debut 30 years ago today.
Lucille Ball was one of the most successful TV comedians, with the smash-hit “I Love Lucy” that is still loved to this day, followed by several other successful shows. From 1951 to 1974, Ball gad a leading role nearly continuously. So, when she announced a comeback in 1986, the buzz was huge.
That show would be called “Life With Lucy,” starring the then 75-year-old Ball, who had complete creative control, including bringing back some of the original Lucy writers. Those included Bob Carroll Jr. and Madelyn Davis, credited with creating the new series. That new series, also starring long-time Lucy co-star Gale Gordon, debuted on ABC on September 20th, 1986.
The first episode scored good ratings, they fell quickly after that the show was canceled after only eight episodes aired, this show was ball’s only TV failure, and she never starred in a scripted role on film or television again.
