“The Search, Part I” is the 3rd season premiere of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Written by Ronald D. Moore (with story by Ira Steven Behr and Robert Hewitt Wolfe), it first aired in syndication on September 26th, 1994.

In the episode, the crew is tasked with heading to the Gamma Quadrant to contact the Founders, the leader of the Dominion. In the previous episode, the Dominion destroyed one of the Federation’s most powerful ships. At the same time, Odo becomes unusually drawn to a particular area of space.

The episode introduces the USS Defiant, a ship that would become a staple of the series for the rest of its run. The ship is a small ship mainly designed for combat and also features a Romulan Cloaking Device. The series also introduced a redesigned Starfleet combadge in this episode.

It ends on a cliffhanger, that continues into the second part of the episode, although the Dominion plotline would weave its way throughout Deep Space Nine throughout the end of the series as well.
