This Day in Video Game History – September 26th, 2000 – Buzz Lightyear of Star Command Released

A game that lets you control the heroic space ranger first introduced in Toy Story was released on this day in history.

Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, developed by Traveller’s Tales and published by Activision, was released for the Sony Playstation and Sega Dreamcast on September 26th, 2000.

The game was based on the animated series of the same name, which chronicled the adventures of Buzz Lightyear and the Space Rangers of Star Command, battling villains across the galaxy.

The player controls Buzz through corridor-based levels, avoiding obstacles and defeating enemies withing a certain amount of time. At the end of most levels, Buzz faces a boss, normally based off one from the series. Supporting characters can provide assistance at certain points, like clearing the screen of enemies or weakening a boss.

The game also features full voice acting and cutscenes from the series. The game would also later be released on Windows PC.
