“Ensign Ro” is the 3rd episode of the 5th season of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Written by Michael Piller (with story by Piller and Rick Berman) and directed by Les Landau, it first aired in syndication on October 7th, 1991.

In the episode, Starfleet Admiral Kennelly assigns Ensign Ro Laren to work with the crew of the Enterprise. She is blamed in the death of eight crewmembers on a previous mission, but has seemingly been pardoned to work on this mission–a mission to convince Bajorans to stop attacking distant Federation colonies. But, is anything with this situation as it seems?

Michelle Forbes makes her debut as Ro Laren, a recurring character throughout the rest of The Next Generation’s run. The Bajorans would go on to be an important race in future Star Trek lore, especially the next spinoff series, Deep Space Nine. Another recurring character, the Enterprise-D’s barber, Mot, also appears for the first time in this episode.
