Two generations of Star Trek collide in an episode that aired 20 years ago today.
“Trials and Tribble-ations” is the 6th episode of the 5th season of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Written by Ronald D. Moore and Rene Echevarria (with story by Ira Steven Behr, Hans Beimler and Robert Hewitt Wolfe), it first aired in syndication on November 4th, 1996.
In the episode, the crew of the Defiant is brought back to past and encounter the original Federation Starship Enterprise, under the command of Captain James T. Kirk. There, they must stop someone from trying to alter history and kill Captain Kirk!
The events of this episode cross over with the beloved original series episode “The Trouble With Tribbles.” This is done with a mix of using old footage, combining old footage with new, and classic props and sets recreated. The episode was made to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the franchise, just as Star Trek: Voyager’s “Flashback” was.
The episode was and still is hailed as a classic by many fans, and is a lighter entry in what is known as the darkest of the modern Star Trek series.
