“The Battle” is the 9th episode of the 1st season of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Written by Herbert J. Wright (with story by Larry Forrester) and directed by Rob Bowman, it first aired in syndication on November 16th, 1987.

In the episode, the Enterprise is set to meet with the Ferengi, an alien race the crew has only encounter once before. They are surprised when the profit-driven people present them with an uncharacteristic gift–Picard’s former starship, the Stargazer. As they work to explore the once-believed-destroyed vessel, Picard begins experiencing unusual headaches and visions.

The Stargazer debuts here as a Constellation-class ship, a design seen in future episodes of the series, such as the USS Hathaway in “Peak Performance.” Ron Jones musical score for the episode uses the Jerry Goldsmith fanfare at certain points, as well as the original Alexander Courage fanfare at other times.
