This Day in Television History – December 4th, 1996 – Dexter’s Laboratory’s “The Big Cheese” Airs

Omelette du fromage!

“The Big Cheese” is a short from the 9th episode of the 1st season of the animated series, Dexter’s Laboratory. Storyboarded by Charlie Bean and directed by Genndy Tartakovsky, it first aired on Cartoon Network on December 4th, 1996.

In the short, boy genius Dexter tries to study for French by playing a recording of french phrases while he sleeps, but it skips—and repeats only phrase: omelette du fromage! He’s horrified at first, but finds he becomes famous, successful, and attractive to the ladies with the simple phrase!

Amusingly, the actual correct translation is “omelette au fromage,” not “du fromage.”
