Today in TV History – January 21st, 2012 – My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic’s “The Last Roundup” Airs

Has Applejack left Ponyville? That’s the tale of an episode that aired six years ago today.

“The Last Roundup” is the 14th episode of the 2nd season of the animated series, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Written by Amy Keating Rogers and directed by James Wootton, it first aired on The Hub network on January 21st, 2012.

In the episode, Applejack plans to travel to a rodeo to help win money to repair Ponyville’s town hall. However, the rest of her friends–and her family–are shocked when she writes them that she isn’t coming back. So, they venture out across Equestria to try to find her and find out what has happened.

One scene in the episode, involving the sorting of cherries, is a tribute to the popular candy stuffing scene from the hit 1950s situation comedy, I Love Lucy.

For the first time in the series, the beloved background character, Derpy Hooves, speaks and is given a name. Her voice was later changed somewhat in later airings of the episodes, and now has the official name of “Muffins,” but many fans still call her Derpy, thanks to her accidentally-mis-animated eyes dating back to the first episode of the series.
