In 1992, Joss Whedon originally created a movie with the same name, which was more comedy-oriented. This television series, which debuted on the then-relatively-new WB network, aired its first episode on March 10th, 1997.

The series starred Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers, a teenager who finds shes been chosen to the vampire slayer in the city of Sunnydale. The series also starred Alyson Hannigan as Willow and Anthony Stewart Head as the Watcher Rupert Giles.

It would last until 2001 on the WB, and then two more years on UPN before ending after seven seasons. The show changed throughout its run—changing from high school to college, for example. There would also be several supporting characters that would become popular during its run, such as the vampire characters of Angel and Spike. Angel would later get his own spinoff that would last five seasons.
