This Day in Television History – March 18th, 1996 – Star Trek: Voyager’s “Deadlock” Airs

Are there now two starship Voyagers, and two crews, who are going through completely different experiences?

“Deadlock” is the 21st episode of the 2nd season of Star Trek: Voyager. Written by Brannon Braga and directed by David Livingston, it first aired on March 18th, 1996 on UPN.

In the episode, the joyous occasion of the first baby born on Voyager is cut short when the ship is crippled by mysterious proton bursts. But, when Kes disappears, she finds herself on another Voyager that’s perfectly fine. Now, can two ships and two crews come together to solve the enigma?

The episode featured a wide array of special effects, including the use of green screen and camera techniques to allow Kate Mulgrew (Janeway) to talk to herself. The Vidiians, recurring enemies throughout the first two seasons of the show, also appear here.

On a personal note, the episode ends with one of my favorite Voyager quotes, “We’re Starfleet officers. Weird is part of the job.”
