“Cause and Effect” is the 18th episode of the 5th season of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Written by Brannon Braga, it first aired in syndication on March 23rd, 1992.

The episode begins with another Federation starship slamming into the Enterprise, destroying it. Then, it continues earlier… leading up to the destruction, which happens again. Slowly, the crew realize events are repeating, each time leading to a deadly conclusion. Can they escape this time loop?

Jonathan Frakes, who plays Commander Riker, directs this episode. Kelsey Grammer, best known for his role on Frasier, has a cameo as Captain Bateson, the commander of the Soyuz-class USS Bozeman which repeatedly slams into the Enterprise-D during the time loop.
