The longtime nemesis of the Enterprise crew, Q, returns and asks to join the crew. When they refuse, Q launches them into a distant part of the Milky Way Galaxy, where they encounter an unusual race of part-human, part-cybernetic lifeforms known as the Borg. And, they could pose a threat that even the crew of the Federation’s flagship can’t overcome…

This is the first episode introducing the Borg, who would go on to be one of the most well-known adversaries in the franchise, featured throughout The Next Generation, Voyager, and Enterprise, as well as the feature film, First Contact. Whoopi Goldberg also appears as Guinan in the episode, establishing her history with both Q and the Borg.
