The episode picks up immediately where Part I left off, with Voyager damaged by the Borg Tactical Cube and Captain Janeway, Tuvok, and Lt. Torres assimilated by the Borg. But, as part of their mission to free the drones of Unimatrix Zero–they are still aware of their human identities. The drones of Unimatrix Zero, which can be visited by Seven of Nine, are aware of their individual selves while not awake and functioning on Borg ships. But, the Borg Queen is aware of the matrix and plans to eliminate it, forever!

Susanna Thompson would play the Borg Queen for the final time in this episode. The character would be played by Alice Krige in her next appearance. Krige played the character originally in Star Trek: First Contact.
